About the Lessons
Iʻm celebrating my 35th year as a vocal coach, and I can honestly say that although I've studied with some excellent teachers, the greatest of all have been my own students. Learning what my students need and designing effective tools to help singers achieve their goals...these are my ongoing sources of inspiration.
The first lesson with me is always a Voice Analysis. I want to help you realize your dream goal, so I need to know exactly where we’re starting from. My patented Voice Analysis process helps me gather that all-important information. Along the way, I’ll give you vital feedback, bringing you to a new understanding of your singing voice, all in the very first lesson.
From there, we decide together which path is right for you.
I might put you on a program of highly effective vocal exercises, we might work on songs, or we could address speech therapy techniques...my approach is always tailored towards your needs as an individual, which I think is better than the 'one size fits all' conventional teaching philosophy.
Over the decades I've spent with professional as well as beginner students, I’ve helped singers overcome nodes and polyps, chronic hoarseness, shortness of breath and shortness of range. The following Hopi Indian proverb captures the essence of my teaching philosophy:
“If you can walk you can dance, if you can talk, you can sing.”
I have never turned a student away, because I firmly believe that ANYONE with a voice can sing.
Songwriting is another area we can explore within the context of my vocal coaching. My own songs have been recorded by Linda Rondstat, Helen Reddy, The Byrds and many others, and I love working with songwriters on their own material. I’m also open to collaborating with students who don’t play an instrument but might have some song ideas they’d like to develop, and I’ve even shown total novices how to write songs from scratch. There’s just nothing like singing a song you've written yourself.
Now that over-internet video calls via Skype and iChat are getting ever easier, I’m able to work with students all over the world, in the privacy of their own homes.
So, let’s begin. Contact me to book your Voice Analysis lesson, and let’s find out how I can best serve your vocal needs.
